There is so much confusion when it comes to the book of Revelation. This is why we are starting a new series walking through this book. Sometimes people avoid it because they think it is too hard to understand. Other times people sensationalize it and use it to push their agenda. There are countless different opinions and interpretations of it. We are going to see that this book is a precious gift from God for our faith and practical lives. Though followers of Christ face trials, suffering, temptations, persecution, and the uncertainties of this broken world, this book calls us to remain faithful because God is always at work. Throughout it there are vivid imagery and powerful visions of heaven and hell, wars and battles, dragons and lambs, and angels and demons. We are reminded that evil will not have the final word. You can read the end of the book, God wins! We will see that our present struggles and turmoil in the world are just temporary. God’s Kingdom is eternal. One day, every tear will be wiped away and all things will be made new. As we journey through this incredible book, we will see that it is not necessarily a secret message for us to unlock, but one that gives us courage to live faithfully and stand firm in Christ. Revelation ultimately points us to Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, who is with us today and for eternity. We are to live knowing that our hope is not found in this fleeting world, but in our victorious Savior, who loves us and gave Himself up for our salvation. Revelation shows us the end of all things, but also the beginning of all things new.

Of all of the incredible stories that the Lord Jesus told during His time on earth—so many powerful, impactful parables with so many applications—there is arguably no parable that applies to more people than this one. It has been titled “The Prodigal Son” and “The Loving Father,” both titles vividly describing the characters in this story. But the focus today is to see ourselves in this story, and to respond to God the Father in the way that brings Him joy.

The book of Psalms is filled with prayers, praise, crying out to God, anguish and just about every other human emotion. It ends with Psalm 150. It is a very short chapter, but an amazing one. It shows us that everything in life ends with worship. No matter what we are going through, what we have faced, or what will happen, through Jesus Christ it will all work out for God’s glory and our good. It will all end with praise. All people are created to worship Him. We are to worship God for who He is and what He has done for us in Christ. We are to worship Him for everything. We are to worship Him in every way. There is not a “correct” way of worshipping God. We are to worship Him everywhere. This Psalm gives us great hope and is so practical for our lives. Knowing the end allows us to worship God through the valleys and mountain top experiences in life.

Do you know God well enough that you stand in awe of Him? This is an important question to consider. The Lord is worthy of our worship and praise. To stand in awe means to have a profound reverence, wonder, amazement and healthy fear of God. His power, wisdom, holiness and glory is so far beyond us. Everything is made by Him, through Him, and for Him. In the book of Romans, we have an amazing passage that speaks of the worship God is worthy of.

There are times in our relationship with the Lord that we can go through the motions. When we know the right things to do, but our heart is far from God. We can put on a good façade on the outside but our inward love for God is cold. We can turn a vibrant relationship with the Lord into a check-list Christianity. This happened throughout the Bible to the people of God. The Lord directly addresses this in the book of Malachi. God’s people were making sacrifices and “doing their duty” but they had no love or devotion to the Lord. When we lose the heart of worship, we are in danger. This morning, we are going to look at coming back to the heart of worship, where it is all about the Lord.

We are starting a new short series for the month of August on Worship. What is worship? That is a really important question to know. There seems to be a lot of confusion on what it actually is. Sometimes we think worship is just signing. People make statements like these, “worship was great today because they played my favorite songs,” or “I did not connect with worship because people’s hands were not raised.” Signing is indeed an expression of worship but it is way deeper than that. Jesus tells us in John 4 that, “true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” It is vital for us to understand that worship is not just a part of our lives, but it is what we do with our lives. All of life is worship. It is not something that is just done on a certain day or location. We worship God by how and why we live. This morning, we are going to look at what worship is and how to worship God in spirit and truth.

But we can go to one extreme or the other, and this sometimes leads us to spiritually unhealthy places. This week is Youth Sunday and we are looking at Luke 19 and the story of Zacchaeus. We will be talking about how Jesus pursues us and what happens when we seek Him as well. In just ten verses, we see the amazing truth that Jesus actively seeks out the lost and the broken among us. Though Zacchaeus was a traitor and outcast to his own people, Jesus called him by name, invited Himself into his home, and transformed his life. Just one encounter with Jesus led to repentance, restored relationships, and lasting change.
