Our journey through the book of 1 John ends this morning. This our 18th week in it and the Lord has taught us so many things. There are certain things that the Lord wants us to know without a shadow of a doubt. One of those things is our salvation. We do not have to guess if God is our Father. We do not have to be confused if we are going to heaven. We do not have to lack assurance about our standing with the Lord. John tells us why he wrote his book in 1 John 5:13, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” We can KNOW that we have eternal life in Jesus. When we know that, it changes how we live and what we are living for.

Sometimes people claim that all paths or roads lead to God. They say that different religions all believe pretty much the same thing. There are many problems with that belief but the main one is that it is simply false and a lie. The Lord is clear that there are not many paths to Him. There is a one way, a narrow way and exclusive way, through Jesus alone. John makes this bold statement in 1 John 5:12, “whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” This morning, we are going to look at eternal life being found in Jesus alone and the assurance we can have of that. When we know Christ, we also want to make Him known and share the good news with others.

We obey God, not to get salvation. Instead, we obey God because we belong to Him through Jesus Christ. It is the fruit of our salvation. I want to please Him. I get to obey Him. God’s ways are better and bring His blessing in our lives. His commandments are not burdensome instead they are a blessing. Now that I have been born of God, I get these new desires to obey and walk with Him. But, I still have my old sinful flesh that at times “wages war” within me. One of the signs that you belong to Jesus is the struggle we have with temptations. This section of 1 John 5 shows us if we know God, we will want to obey Him. There are three areas that our lives reflect. We are going to see how the Lord has also given us everything we need right now to overcome the temptations of the world around us.

The instruction in 1 John 4:7 is not a suggestion; it is an order. So much is riding on how well the church loves one another. In fact, effectively accomplishing the mission of the church hinges on this single issue. John points to a number of factors that are affected by how well the church loves one another. As we study 1 John 4:13-21, we will discover five actions that occur when the church excels at loving one another.

God is love. This is a loaded statement from this section of 1 John 4. Love is not just an action but it is part of the very nature of God. Love is one of the most powerful forces in the cosmos. Love is manifested in what God did for us. He sent forth His only Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus. It is not that we were loveable but while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. It is the most amazing love in the world and one we were created to experience. When we know the love of God in Christ, it transforms us to love as God has loved us. If we do not love, it is evidence that we might not belong to God at all. John says it like this, “anyone who does not love does not know God.” This morning, we are going to unpack what it means that “God is love” and how this changes us to love others.

We live in a day and age where it is sometimes hard to recognize the truth from error. With the 24/7 news cycle, the access to unlimited information on the internet, and the rise of AI, discerning what is true and what is false is becoming difficult. The Lord has called us not to be naive and believe everything. Instead, we are to be directed by His Word and the Holy Spirit. We have the ability to know what is from God and what is not. We will be in the amazing and practical section of 1 John 4:1-6 to see how to be guided instead of gullible. This Sunday is also Mother’s Day. It is a day designed to honor our mothers and show gratitude for all their sacrifice. Motherhood is a special and sacred calling. This day also elicits many emotions. We will be having a time to celebrate our mothers and also recognize the pain and hardships that this day brings about.

We all have questions, at times, about our status and standing with the Lord. Sometimes, our hearts condemn us and we question our salvation or if God really loves us. There is something special about knowing you belong to Jesus. The Lord wants us to have great confidence in our standing with Him. He gives us the gift of assurance. We can know, without a shadow of a doubt, that we are going to heaven and that God is with us now. Assurance is found in the nature of God, the power of the Holy Spirit, and also when we abide or obey the Lord. The fruit of our lives and the transformation that God has done shows evidence that we belong to Him. This section of 1 John is all about the gift of assurance and how it gives us great confidence in God.

The center of our faith is love. 1 John tells us that “God is love.” We can know love as well. It is seen in the sacrifice of Christ and how He laid down His life for us (1 John 3:16). The love of God should not be some distant idea for followers of Christ, but should shape everything about their lives. We are not to love just by our intentions but by our actions. We are to love as God has loved us. Love has the ability to overcome and shape us into being the people the Lord designed us to be. This section of 1 John gives us clear evidence of how knowing the love of God should shape our lives. It also shows us how love is worked out in our daily lives and how to walk in love with our motives and actions.

The believer in Christ has been given a new nature that is in Christ. Yet that same believer still has the old sin nature that is completely self-focused—a virtual “me monster.” The differences between the two natures are stark: the new nature in Christ does not sin because it is born in Christ; the me monster does nothing but sin. The me monster cannot be reformed; it must be programmed to be dead (Romans 6:11). The key to destroying the me monster is to abide in Christ—to discover His will and then to do His will.
