1-3 John: Without a Shadow of a Doubt

Far too many times, followers of Christ lack confidence. Some doubt and question if they are really saved or belong to the Lord. Others are mistaken about their salvation. They think they know Christ, but nothing in their lives show that. Still others are deceived and believe lies about God and themselves. One of the things that the Lord wants us to have is certainty and assurance. This is exactly what 1 John is all about. Listen to 1 John 5:13, “ I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” God wants us to know Him and know that we belong to Him. It is vitally important for our lives. We are going to walk through 1 John, verse by verse, and see how to have absolute certainty that we belong to Jesus. 1 John is going to encourage us, help us grow spiritually, challenge us, and also reveal things that need to change. Its main theme is having fellowship, or a deep relationship, with the Living God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The book of 2 John is a very brief and short letter. It is written to help us remain in the truth and walk in love. There are many minefields to traverse in our walk with God. One of those is drifting from the truth of Jesus. John reminds us to “watch yourselves,” and not believe everything you hear. There are external and internal threats. We need to be on guard against false teachings and lies that try to derail our walk with the Lord. Also, we need to guard our hearts from lacking love. We do not have to feel inadequate or afraid, as we will see that the Lord has given us everything we need for life and godliness in Christ.

3 John is the shortest book in the New Testament. It is often overlooked and underappreciated. Yet, it is filled with great truths for our spiritual and relational lives. The focus is on three individuals and the church as a whole embracing the truth and living at peace with others. One person was faithful, one was flawed and the last one was fruitful. We see that the Lord desires us to love, embrace, and walk in the truth. We also see that conflict happens when we do not keep Christ first. When people become big and God becomes small, many problems happen. This morning, we are going to look at how to navigate walking in the truth and being fruitful in our lives.

The Lakes Church - June 21 2026 11:15 am

Our journey through the book of 1 John ends this morning. This our 18th week in it and the Lord has taught us so many things. There are certain things that the Lord wants us to know without a shadow of a doubt. One of those things is our salvation. We do not have to guess if God is our Father. We do not have to be confused if we are going to heaven. We do not have to lack assurance about our standing with the Lord. John tells us why he wrote his book in 1 John 5:13, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” We can KNOW that we have eternal life in Jesus. When we know that, it changes how we live and what we are living for.
