There are two important things that we need in our lives that we usually underestimate. The power of encouragement and the power of correction. Jesus has the most to say to the church we are looking at this week. It is the church of Thyatira. He brings them a strong encouragement but also a strong correction. There are some incredible things happening in and through them. The Lord wants them to continue to soldier on and stay the course. But, He has one major thing against them. Some are tolerating perversion and false teaching that is leading them into sin. In one sense, the value of tolerance can be a good thing when we respect others who disagree with us. In another sense, and what is happening here, tolerance is leading to sin. They are accepting, loving, and partaking in things that God hates. Their “tolerance” is really an excuse to do whatever they want. Tolerance can be a sin when it moves from patience and respect for differences into celebration, silence, and taking part in evil. We must be on guard not to follow the course of this world but to follow Christ.

The world around us is constantly trying to influence and control our thinking. The temptations come in all different directions. We can slowly, or quickly, fade into compromising our faith. This is not a new phenomenon either. The Old Testament is filled with the people of God adapting and adopting the world’s values and falling away from the Lord. We come to a church in Pergamum that was doing some things well. Jesus also comes to them to correct and warn them that they are fading in compromise. They were allowing the world to influence them instead of influencing the world around them. They were also believing dangerous and destructive false teaching that was causing them to stumble into sin. Jesus comes to help, encourage, heal, rebuke, correct and protect His people. The Lord cares deeply about us and has the double edged sword to convict and heal us. There is so much at stake and the words that the Lord speaks to Pergamum can literally save and protect our lives, marriages, family and future. We need to pay careful attention.

Life is hard, but God is good. We come to a church that understood this statement. Their life was hard but they knew the goodness of God. The second church addressed in Revelation is called Smyrna. It was probably small and felt insignificant, They looked poor and unimportant. Yet, this church was highly valued in Jesus' eyes. The Lord is pleased with this place. It is one of only two churches that needed no correction. They were dealing with suffering, persecution, and opposition. They probably wondered if they were going to make it or die out. The Lord speaks to them so they have great assurance and encouragement to endure. He knows what they are facing and will see them through. He knows what is going on or will go on in our lives and will see us through as well. We find so much strength to live faithfully in Jesus’ words to this church.

Staying the Course Through Suffering - October 11, 2026 - Pastor Mark Pospisil

We come to shift in the book of Revelation. Over the next seven weeks, we will be looking at seven churches that Jesus Himself directly addresses. They were real churches dealing with issues that affect our lives today. We start by seeing the church in Ephesus. On the outside, it looked the part. The Lord even commends them for some of the things that they are doing. They had right beliefs, some righteous practices, and they were doing some good works. But, their love for the Lord had grown cold. They were just going through the motions. Jesus uses a strong word and rebuke to tell them that they “abandoned” their first love. It is like when a spouse abandons their marriage. The people of God did not see the condition of their soul that needed to be renewed. The Lord does not correct them to shame them, but to call them back to Himself and restore their souls. He is doing that in our lives right now as well. This morning we are going to look at how to avoid going through the motions and renew our love for Christ.

When you think of Jesus, what comes to your mind? How would you describe Him? The book of Revelation gives us many “depictions” of the exalted Christ. In the first chapter, the Apostle John is given a vision of heaven and gets a glimpse of Jesus. He describes it vividly. It is so overwhelming that he proclaims in Revelation 1:17, “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.” Just imagine that. John, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, gets one sight and is so overwhelmed that he can only fall down as though dead. We are going to unpack the rest of Revelation 1 and see who Jesus is. All of the descriptions about Him are pointing to His authority and glory. The more we know who Jesus, the more it transforms and changes us to become who the Lord designed us to be.

The book of Revelation begins with some amazing promises, declarations, and insights. Right away, we learn what kind of book it is and to whom it was written. Revelation was specifically and directly written to seven churches in Asia, and we learn more about each of these churches in chapters 2 and 3. These churches were facing hardships, temptations, and pressure to compromise their faith in Jesus. Yet, rather than beginning with everything happening around them, Revelation begins by directing their focus to Jesus. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the One who rules over all things and will soon return and reign. He is the firstborn from the dead and the King of kings. Revelation makes the astonishing declaration that this King loves us—and the word used is active, meaning that even now, He loves us. His love transforms us to be His people and serve as priests to God.

There is so much confusion when it comes to the book of Revelation. This is why we are starting a new series walking through this book. Sometimes people avoid it because they think it is too hard to understand. Other times people sensationalize it and use it to push their agenda. There are countless different opinions and interpretations of it. We are going to see that this book is a precious gift from God for our faith and practical lives. Though followers of Christ face trials, suffering, temptations, persecution, and the uncertainties of this broken world, this book calls us to remain faithful because God is always at work. Throughout it there are vivid imagery and powerful visions of heaven and hell, wars and battles, dragons and lambs, and angels and demons. We are reminded that evil will not have the final word. You can read the end of the book, God wins! We will see that our present struggles and turmoil in the world are just temporary. God’s Kingdom is eternal. One day, every tear will be wiped away and all things will be made new. As we journey through this incredible book, we will see that it is not necessarily a secret message for us to unlock, but one that gives us courage to live faithfully and stand firm in Christ. Revelation ultimately points us to Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, who is with us today and for eternity. We are to live knowing that our hope is not found in this fleeting world, but in our victorious Savior, who loves us and gave Himself up for our salvation. Revelation shows us the end of all things, but also the beginning of all things new.

Of all of the incredible stories that the Lord Jesus told during His time on earth—so many powerful, impactful parables with so many applications—there is arguably no parable that applies to more people than this one. It has been titled “The Prodigal Son” and “The Loving Father,” both titles vividly describing the characters in this story. But the focus today is to see ourselves in this story, and to respond to God the Father in the way that brings Him joy.

The book of Psalms is filled with prayers, praise, crying out to God, anguish and just about every other human emotion. It ends with Psalm 150. It is a very short chapter, but an amazing one. It shows us that everything in life ends with worship. No matter what we are going through, what we have faced, or what will happen, through Jesus Christ it will all work out for God’s glory and our good. It will all end with praise. All people are created to worship Him. We are to worship God for who He is and what He has done for us in Christ. We are to worship Him for everything. We are to worship Him in every way. There is not a “correct” way of worshipping God. We are to worship Him everywhere. This Psalm gives us great hope and is so practical for our lives. Knowing the end allows us to worship God through the valleys and mountain top experiences in life.
