You don’t know God if you hate your brother. John is crystal clear about this. He says in 2:9, “Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.” Hate and following Jesus are not compatible. Hate drives us to the darkness and blinds our hearts and eyes. The good news is that Jesus gives us a new way to be human. One that is not driven by hate but by love. We do not have to be controlled by others but now we can be controlled by the Holy Spirit who produces good fruit in our lives. In this section of 1 John, we are given another test about knowing we are in our relationship with God. How we love or lack of it, shows so much about our own soul.

It keeps many followers of Christ feeling powerless and stuck. This section of 1 John directly addresses all of these issues. Billy Graham once said, “want to know if you really follow Jesus? Read the book of 1st John.” This statement is so true. We can know that we know Christ. The Lord wants us to know Him and know that we belong to Him. It is vitally important for our lives. We can experience His forgiveness and power to change. We can have freedom to be truly human. All of this is available to us through Jesus, who is our Advocate. This morning, we are going to unpack what it exactly means to have Jesus as our advocate and have deep assurance of our status with Go
